Session 1: “Become a Listener”

Friday, June 14th (3 pm-4:30 pm)

This session will explore how music creates meaning. In an informal, interactive setting, 3S² will take you through our process of performing and interpreting music. We’ll dive into some heady topics, such as the performance of silence, the audacity of composition, and the creation of emotion. We’ll also take a whirlwind tour of the last 100 years of music, and discover how languages may change, but good ideas remain the same. At the end of our journey, you’ll never listen to music the same way again!

Session 2: “Become a Composer”

Saturday, June 15th (10 am – 11:30 pm)

This session will develop your ability to organize and communicate complex ideas through a technique called “graphic notation.” In this practice, developed nearly 70 years ago, musical scores written with graphic notation are made up of abstract shapes and written directions. Unlike traditional music notation, there are no specialized symbols. You do not need to know how to read music to learn how to compose a graphic score. During the class, participants will develop distinctive, original musical compositions. Each participant will have selections of their score performed by 3S², and selected scores will be premiered by NMFP Young Artists at the concluding concert.
